The Journey Begins III

Day TWENTY-FOUR
Date - Tuesday, 24 April 2012
0820 hrs

Sorry everyone for abandoning this blog for a bit. I am intensely observing the paradox of life in this region and want to collate everything before i write anything at the end of the week. I have just been invited to The Dollhouse Glamazon Fashion Show at The Pontoon, Phnom Penh on thursday. So i want to include that experience in. Watch out for this trail on Saturday. It is going to be shocking, disturbing, hilarious, enlightening and more than anything, eye opening. Stay tuned!!

Day NINETEEN
Date - Thursday, 19 April 2012
0647 hrs

I did zonked out last night but only for slightly under 5 hrs. Woke up to the devil's advocate where Charlize Theron slit here neck with a broken mirror right before her husband, played by Keanu Reeves. Morbid, i know. But it did wake me up.

I realized i had skipped day eighteen and perhaps it was due to all the work which got me so knackered that i totally had forgotten about it. Yesterday was pretty eventful. Got up early and had a message from Diana asking me to visit her at her guest house, Bloom Garden. It was Gorgeous! Quiet, green, rays upon rays of the diamond sun seeped through the canopy of her lovely garden. I could not help but notice the luscious orchard of flora and fauna that envelops her property, how still everything was and how replenishing all that would be to the soul.

After a tour of the rooms, we sat at the front porch for our never less than incredibly fun chats full of laughter and emotions. When you sit down and have a conversation with this girl, she will open up to you and will almost compel you to do the same. I always felt that i knew her a long time. Nonetheless, it was not as peaceful to her the morning was as running a guest house has its woes and the morning was one of those. After dealing with her staff, we set off for what was suppose to be shopping at a second hand boutique but halfway cycling to the shop, she suggested that i helped out at the soup kitchen as it was the first day of resuming operation. I knew she had lots in her mind and also i thought it was a brilliant idea as it was my last day. She dropped me off, introduced me to Robin and Kosal and off she went to sort out her business.

Robin was a little apprehensive and Kosal was very friendly. However in the end when we all got warmed up to each other, like Diana, these 2 had as huge a heart as altruism does. Chopping, cutting and peeling the tonnes of vegetables that were in the kitchen for Kosal to cook later.

Day SEVENTEEN
Date - Tuesday, 17 April 2012
0810 hrs

Did not have a good sleep last night. Throat was itchy and lungs were clogged. The weather is Siem Reap is just unbearable. Teamperature goes up to 40 deg C and add that with all the dust that is clouding the city, the respiratory system can take a toll.

Shortly after breakfast yesterday, i set myself out for another hammock day. It was kewl under the shady canopy of the trees. I did go back to the same spot. It was more quiet as i think it was a bit early. About 30 minutes after i settled down, Diana called me suggesting the pool at Rahim's beautiful guest house, The Palm and Pool Villa. I didnt think twice and immediately packed, headed back to the hotel, got my trunks and zoomed to P&P. It was bliss, diving into the cool water and chilling out in the shade in this kind of weather is a perfect way of having a cheap getaway.

We hung out for about an hour and a half, showered, i browsed about rahim's place and we cycled off to EightRooms, Jason Lim's property just down the dirt road. Interesting to see a mosque majestically stood close by like a sore thumb. Well, not so majestic though. Anyway, Jason, another singaporean, owns this little but lovely guest house called EightRooms. I didnt get to really see it as it was getting uncomfortably hot and we were all hungry. It was my vegetarian day and fortunately everyone agreed. Went to the nice little vegetarian resto called the Vitking. And there wE went, 3 singaporeans belting out about life. It was sweet.

After lunch, everyone split and i went back to the hotel, had a shower and head down to town for a quick message before meeting Phanny. Of course i went back to the USD5 Khmer Message and this time it was a different girl and she was better!! There were times when i startled myself with a grunt falling to sleep. Haha.. It was a good start to the long ride to see Phanny.

When I got there, he was not around, so i cycled around the village and observe their kampong life. A man in a hammock bottle feeding his baby, a woman bathing her 5 children, an old bald lady (which was the commonest sight) on a bike coming back from marketing and children everywhere either playing with dirt or singing happily with not so familiar tunes looking joyful. But the one thing that was in common among them were the honest greeting of HELLO matched with the infectious smile that never failed to warm me. Every single one of them. Without fail, smiling and greeting me into the hearts of their livelihoods. After seeing the welcome and the genuine smile, i repeat, GENUINE, i thought, what the heck is Singapore girl?

Half an hour later, Phanny showed up running and limping welcoming me to his village. But before we could do anything, i told him i wanted to take him to a clinic. The wounds on his leg from the accident the day before have all gotten infected. It was so bad you could see the whitish part of the flesh. He refused to go and we ended up settling at the local pharmacy. With USD15, the pharmacist got the wounds cleaned and tidied up with a bandage and the rest of the works. I felt so much better as i just could not imagine leaving him knowing what would happen to the wounds and his leg if it went untreated. You would do the same lah. After the clean up, i bought some groceries for his family and left as it was about to get dark soon. Before i left, he hugged me and said, thank you brother and good luck on your travels.

It always feel good to help someone without the remotest sense of hesitation. Because then the help comes in the highest form of genuinity and the one being helped wont be made to feel apprehensive and indebted. In the end, everyone goes home a winner. A good deed has been given and well received and that little tiny world between the two gets a little better.

So now it is almost 9.00 am after breakfast. Gonna go up to my room for some dumpingtons time before heading to Rahim's pool.

Day SIXTEEN
Date - Monday, 16 April
0810 hrs

Yesterday was a little intense. I had cycled altogether a total of about 40 kilometers towards Angkor Wat and back towards Tonle Sap lake. I did not get to both though but i ended up in a serene county south of Siem Reap where i found bridges linking the east and west part of Siem Reap river. On the map of Siem Reap, you would only find 8 of such bridges but i had counted a total of 15 links between the east and the west. It reminded me of that movie, The Bridges of Madison County. Though not as melancholic and beautiful as Madison, these bridges give a sense of character to each of the municipal it represents. Some are old, one seems to be in gold, others are bold and the rest are simply covered in mold.

The highlight was meeting a cambodia boy named Phanny. He yelled at me cos he wanted to see my tattoo and he showed me his. Speaking in perfect english, he invited me to his home for what he said was to show me a true cambodian welcome. An offered one must not refuse. So here i am after breakfast and looking forward to visiting Phanny and his family.

Day FIFTEEN
Date - Sunday, 15 April 2012
0830 hrs

I did not get to write anything on my blog last night as system was down and i WAS tired. 3 main highlights of yesterday were as follows:

1. The Hammock and The Marine.

Slightly after 12.00 hrs, i found a perfect spot by the river and put up my hammock. The day was perfect. An umbrella of a huge angsana tree right above me provided an excellent shade allowing just tiny rays of light through gaps between the leaves, making it looked like a canopy of shimmering diamonds. The wind was blowing gust of cool breeze, leaves were rustling through the trees, birds were chirping the afternoon lullaby, the river joined by the rippling water. Even the occasional zooming of traffic tuned in to the afternoon chorus.
An hour into my book, i was approached by an African American guy who claimed he was a lost soldier (he DID look like a marine) trying to find money to get a bus ticket to Phnom Penh as the story went that he lost his money and passport, of course. He spoke in such American accent, like those from Nashville or sum'in, i almost demanded an apology for such bad english. Anyway, he was begging up the wrong soul. One that is backpacking and ran out of money himself should never be bothered by hustlers. I told him my predicament and he took off.
And another hour into my nap, i woke up to a few passers by whom i caught staring and scrutinizing me. I tried to ignore them and pretended to look around. But i DID look around and decided to pack up and immediately leave. Its the New Year and the Cambodian flags were inevitably visible. I looked at my hammock and it is the exact colors of the flag.

2. The Doctor and his Cello

In 1971, a Swiss pediatrician travelled to Phnom Penh to work in a small hospital to help sick children. The plight of these children moved him so much, he decided to dedicate his life to help them. Unfortunately, the war came and ravaged the whole country. 2 million people perished. Many were children. In 1979, the Swiss pediatrician came back. Drove with passion and dedication, he began his mission in saving children in Phnom Penh. Made the children's plight visible to the world and almost begged for financial support. In 1999, he gained the attention of the Swiss president who got her government to provide that required support. And so it started. People from around the world, mainly the Swiss donated millions of dollars and today, the donation has stabilized at USD36 million a year resulting in 2 Kantha Bhopa hospital in Siem Reap and Phnom Penh and 2 Maternity hospitals.

The best thing about these medical centers is that they are absolutely free as the doctor said, an ease of mind to the mothers is such an important key for the survival of the children, and how true was that! No bills to pay, long travels to the hospital will be paid for and no debts needed for the family. All smiles. So far Katha Bopha has hospitalized 11.5 million children. All free.

90% of Cambodians are poor. An average salary of these poor villagers is only USD0.50 per day. 50 cents??? The American government who contributed the 10 million landmines in the 70s has stopped funding the hospital cos they said the patients do not pay. I said, how? Geez, you figure it out. Kantha Bopha has managed, with the money to have 2400 cambodians working for them with PROPER wages to avoid corruption, has state of the art equipments, which they must, in order to ensure low mortality rate and continued follow-up of the children of up to a year. Then a group of tourist said the Kantha Bopha was too expensive to sustain. And after watching the concert by the cellist for FREE, they f**ked off to their USD340 a night 5 star hotel. Screw that.

Nonetheless, the doctor has learned how to forgive the paradox, the irony by letting it go cos otherwise, his mission cannot be met by his frustration. To this day, he armed himself with his cello as his weapon to, in his own term, beg for money from the rich and blood donation from the young, every week, for the past 12 years. He has dreams. He said that if he could save 11.5 million children without the evil of corruption in Cambodia where corruption reigns, he will want to see if he could try this in Africa. He is a pediatrician, an advocate for children's rights, a hater of corruption and a saint. His name is Dr Beat Richner.

3. The Yogi and the Drag Queens

After an intense episode of sitting through the video on the plight of the Cambodian children, Melor and I decided to drop by Linga, a gay club to watch a drag show to lighten our emotions. This was after dinner. Linga was full house. However, the waiter found us a seat that was located strategically, it was near the stage. As we sat down, all eyes were on us. Melor said that the guys next to me was staring at me like i was a piece of succulent meat. Great!
We started to notice how young the patrons were and hearing closely, many of them were Thais, with their stylish dressing, cladded with iPhones. They were many girls, caucasian girls, cabin crew and other travellers, i believe and i was glad cos i that would make Melor at ease, i thought, among all those uninvited scrutinizations. Once i took out my iPad for the kodak moment, i almost hear the boys go, hmm... Wondering where i was from cos the iPad is like an extravagant indulgence here. They started to look at my tattoos, notice my tongue stud and talk among themselves. I tried to chill, turned around and chatted with Melor without helping to notice the glances of eyes around me. In the end it was a white guy who daringly gave his smile and attention to me. As he got up and what looked like an imminent self introduction, i looked at Melor and said loudly, err.... Bill? Paid our bill and scrammed. Haha...

So there, yesterday's story morning glory. Today was a bit of a frustration. It is the 3rd and most important day of the new year and the pagodas are jammed up with people but the worst is the authority blocking of road access of up to half a kilometer from the Royal residence. It was so annoying as i could not get through to anywhere for shade and a hammock day. But then i looked up the sky, dark shades from the clouds ground me a reason to cycle back and have a snooze.. Zzz...

The Journey Begins

Day FOURTEENTH
Date - Saturday, 14 April 2012
0840 hrs

Just had my usual breakfast sitting with a panel of international tourist. The Frenchies, Philippinos, Chinese (they are everywhere), and the Singaporeans lah. I must remember to go easy on the coffee. As i didn't have much to do today, i am really looking forward to the concert by Dr Ritchner who plays the cello for free every Saturday to raise funds for his free hospital here in Siem Reap. I remember the last time i heard him played, i cried to bits!! His passion and dedication for over 35 years fighting for the Cambodian children had gained interest and attention of the Swiss government who has been the biggest sponsor for the Kanta Bopha hospital. The most heart breaking about the concert is the video showing the plight of the Cambodians since the reign of the Khmer Rouge. But until then, i thnk i am going to cycle around as far away from Siem Reap as i could but towards the opposite direction of Angkor Wat.

Anyway the reason i had nothing much to do is because Mavis, who owns the soup kitchen has left town and the kitchen itself is closed for a week for the Khmer New Year and most of the diners would be back at their kampongs. And the funny CONCert Cambodia volunteer organization is not as enthusiastic as i thought they would be. Oh brother, even doing charity is hard to do. What is happening to this world. Then don't lah be so aggressive with the volunteer ads. If they want to target charities from the rich, no need to beat about the bush and see if the rich response. So westernized. Urgh. I just teach yoga lah.

So there, been hanging out a lot with Melor. Thank goodness. Been writing my workshop notes for Phnom Penh. And since money is running out due to my unforseen no salary from work in KL (didn't expect this, which has sort of ruined my trip), not much sale from garage sale to help me, not enough sponsorship, and so forth, i will be aborting this trip and come back to KL after Saigon, get my cat and come back to Phnom Penh. So i decided, i am gonna squeezeeeeeee to get to Ho Chi Minh City and come back. Don't think my other dream of seeing HaLong Bay is gonna happen, though. Oh well, another time maybe.. And besides my being sick lately is not helping with the cost... Haha.. Its sad but i think many would want me safe.

Day THIRTEENTH
Date - Friday, 13 April 2012
0610 hrs

Its friday the 13th. Tomorrow is the start of the Khmer holiday. Not necessarily I know what to do, though. The hotel reception, Sovann Coco, who has just became my facebook friend, said that there is no party here. I asked if there would be dancing and he said that "Yes, you dance with the Pagoda.". Everyone laughed! He asked what my plans are for today and I said, "2 fried eggs, 2 toasts, 2 bacon, and 1 coffee.". And off he went and cooked all that for me.

Actually my plans for today is to cycle off to Bayon, the furthest temple north of Siem Reap. Its the one with the big faces of Buddha. The weather looks like its gonna be beautiful.

Exactly at 0700 hrs, i set off on by bike to Bayon. A minute down the road, "thump thump phssss..". Damn, a flat tyre!! Fortunately i was not far from the bicycle shop and managed to turn back and was suggested to change bikes. After that fix, i was off. The road seems a little more busy than usual and my enthusiasm went slowly downhill when i notice buses after buses of tourist with the all too familiar flag going towards the same direction. I immediately changed course and took the path off the beaten track and 20 minutes later found myself back in Ta Phrom village. I saw this lonely bull, which had a chain around its neck and i decided to stop and have my kodak moment. As i held up my iPad towards the direction of this beautiful creature against the scenic cambodian plains, to my horror, a huge yellow hot air balloon rose from the horizon!! An absolutely soresight among nature's wonder. Off i go to Bayon. By this time, i saw like the entire chinese population was in Bayon. Only 15 minutes of my kodak moments with King Jayavarman VII, the annoying crowd drive me off the temple.

In my ride back, i couldn't help but noticed military men with their M-16s all over the city. Well, it is the new year. The authorities do want the city safe. "su sdaey, au kun and au kun srey" could be heard everywhere. Kind of remind me of the Thais during this lull period, on whatever the matter is, for sure one will hear, "mai ping rai.", which means, no worries.

0915 hrs - Arrive back at the hotel. The ride was such a hot and sweaty one due to the blinding heat. Went straight to my room, had a quick wash up and zzzzz....

After a cool 2 hours snooze, i got up and prepared for lunch. I was so gung ho about having the beef rice at the roadside but to my despair, it was closed for the new year. Hmm, had to cycle to Pub Street for my meal and it was actually as cheap and as worth it as any local foodstall lah. Just a short cycle back and i was sweating like a pig! I just had to catch my breath at the lobby, so i thought i'd have a bit of a rest and write my workshop notes. A minute later, the reception brought cold towels, ice water coffee and fruits. Wow. And then another coffee, and another and another.

After an hour, i got up to my room and planned to have a snooze but of course, after all that coffee? Impossible. Started to update my facebook and edited my photos. Switched on the tele and watched Nanny Diaries. At 5.15 pm, headed down to the posh Victoria Angkor for the unbelievable 50% off all drinks and free flow of 5-star canapes. Cheapskate lah we all... Had a wonderful heart 2 heart talk with Melor. Hanging out with her then was like hanging out with Aunt Agony with all my personal issues dropped on her like Hiroshima. However unlike the Japanese, she took the bomb and disarmed it, turned it around and showed me my wake up call. Arrrgghh....

After a couple of glasses of wine, we thought the night needed a cool down and headed to Blue Pumpkin for an ice cream to seal the day.

2100 hrs i arrived back in my room, had a shower and just in time to catch Harry Potter and The Sorcerer's Stone, chatted with my Wizard and that took me here at 2300 hrs. Time for bed... Zzzz...

Day TWELVE
Date - Thursday, 12 April 2012
2010 hrs

0420 hrs - Set off to Angkor Wat for another sunrise with Melor
0700 hrs - Cycle off to Ta Phrom. Got lost. Ended in some kampong. Played with kids. Ate at their stall.
0730 hrs - Stomachache. Left Melor. Cycle off home.
0830 hrs - Breakfast at the hotel. Edit photos.
0915 hrs - Update Facebook.
1000 hrs - ZZzzzzzzz......
1145 hrs - Up for news, lunch by the roadside. Fried beef with vegetables, steam rice, glass of crushed ice cos i got my own mineral water - USD2.
1230 hrs - Chill out at Blue Pumpkin with Melor. Wrote my workshop notes, update Facebook, browse internet, catch up with Melor. Iced Cafe Mocha w Ice Cream, Nachos, Lemon Coconut - USD7.25
1530 hrs - Cycle home. Wrote to CONcert Cambodia for Voluntourism activity.
1600 hrs - ZZzzzzzz......
1730 hrs - Watched 911 movie on tele.
1900 hrs - Self Practice yoga, Standing Series
2000 hrs - Off to dinner at same place. Roast Chicken Rice, coke - USD2.
2020 hrs - Back in room, watch end of Adventureland on tele.
2055 hrs - Getting ready for bed, early morning tomorrow for last sunrise at Angkor and Bayon.

2 things i learned today. There are no movie theatres as the government bans a lot of stuff like bad words and kissing and smoking to be shown on screen. Even on tele, smoking would end up be shown as a blurred vision around the mouths of smokers. As for movies, there will be halls where chairs are arranged theatre like and facing the inside. Public can just sit and watch whatever is on screen, usually some Khmer or Thai movie. If you have no money, you can stand by theroad looking in to the screen. Kind of remind me in the late 70s when my sis used to take me to open air movie night. Tomorrow is the start of the Khmer New Year. Many balik kampong. No party on the streets. Sounds a little quiet or was it too early? There is a birthday party going on next door. The sound is deafening. Hope it doesn't last. Sounds like some massive and tacky disco playing over blasting euro trash house music. Urgh...

Day ELEVEN
Date - Wednesday, 11 April 2012
2200 hrs

The eleventh day was spent beautifully. At 0415 hrs, i was already on my way to Angkor Wat on pedals. I was the first one to arrive at the ticket booth at 0440 hrs. The guide said "5 minutes.". In ten minutes, tuktuks were pouring in and i quickly got in the queue and bought my 3-Day pass. And off i went and it seemed that i was the only one on a bike. The road was long and the sky was like looking up to a ceiling of diamonds! The moment i walked through the gates of Angkor, it stood almost startling me with awe of its majestic sight. Found a high spot on the old temple right across Angkor, laid down my big yellow african shawl and set my picnic basket.

Then the sky behind the temple started to change. An enchantingly beautiful hue of pink started to emerge from the horizon followed by purples and reds. This awe inspiring sky continued to display a series of kaleidoscope of colors. It was so captivating that i constantly found my jaw literally hanging by its hinges. Until a China tour group came in and made the whole experience infuriating with their inconsiderate shouting and yelling to each other at the top of their voices. I thought, don't this people shut up?! No they didn't. I took off.

After breakfast and a quick nap, i woke up at noon and head down to BluePumpkin. A sort of chill out place for foreigners. Nice cosy upper floor side cushioned seats where patrons can stretch out and enjoy their meals. Met up with a Singaporean girl, Diana, a really kewl and lovely girl whom i spent the next 3 hrs with just reminiscing about singapore and life in general. She also took me to her shop where she sells bags made out of recycled plastic. Gosh, she could give Freitag a run for their money, seriously!! It was fun, and the highlight was this US3 Khmer message that she took me to. WOW!! I'd pay US25-US30 for this in Bali!! Geez! Then we went back for another snooze before meeting up at Peace Cafe to do yoga. I was their earlier and had this quite expensive orange juice which cost me US2. Hmm... Whatever.

After Diana arrived, we set up in the yoga room, an overweight scruffy new yorker, David were waiting for students. Apologizing for his english and accent, so he should, he also emphasized on this gentle yoga that was to follow next. He was Anusara. Adjusted me all the way. Always fell into conflict with my own personal practice. Don't get me wrong, i kind of like the class and would have liked it more if he didn't think that i was trying to show off all the time when i all i did was only trying to adjust myself to the capacity of my own body. Oh brother,he started on philosophy and emphasized on not forcing. Hmm... Whatever, again. I WAS enjoying the class and this guy kept pulling me back. But nonetheless, i was glad that Diana, a novice found it enlightening.

All over, we made our way to Soria Moria hotel resto where everything went for US1!! Is this insane or what? All tapas style, and good!! Melor came shortly and joined us. Diana left me and Melor shortly after finishing her dinner and both of us stayed for another hour as we caught up on sooo many things. It was such a fruitful day and Melor and I gonna continue our temple visit starting with sunrise at Angkor. Again. My 9th time....

I came back to the hotel now. Happy news of the earthquake and the lifting of the Tsunami alert. So now i can sleep soundly dreaming of Angkor.... Nanite lovelies....

Day TEN
Date - Tuesday, 10 April 2012
0500 hrs

Couldnt sleep. Mr snuffles was the loudest, people fighting. Anyway, did have a chat with mr snuffles. He was from england and was a travel writer. Shared stories of KL and Singapore. Very interesting. He also gave a good tip on cambodia. So here i am, waiting for a cab to Hualamphong.

Bye Bangkok.. I love you!

0600 hrs - Train slowly leaves for Aranthyaprathet. Bought the tickets at BHT48 only. Throngs of locals rushed up the train carrying flower necklaces made from marigolds and jasmines. I was lucky i got an empty seat. Shortly, a little girl carrying loads of flowers sat on the opposite. I couldnt help to notice all the tired faces of these vendors carrying their goods, obviously made and prepared in the wee hours before the train leaves. Mid-way, scores of police came up and checked our passports, i was sad to see that they shooed some of the teenagers who were trying to get away not paying. If my body language is still not rusty, the teenagers were chased away with their goods because they didnt have enough money to pay. Then my heart broke when i saw the little girl trying to plead with the officers to let her stay. After scores of yelling and scolding, she was allowed to stay for a few more stops until another set of officers came up and forced her down, i was too afraid to defend her, wishing i could help her and her other 2 friends to stay. I didnt know where was her stop. After she left, the train took us another 30 minutes and 5 stops later. Gosh, i hope those poor kids didnt have much to go or i cannot imagine them walking their way all the way to aranthyaprathet. :( All the way i thought about the poor kids. How strict the police were (i guess in this case, they have to be), how blistering the weather was and how harsh the terrain was.

12.30 hrs - The moment i arrived at Aranthyaprathet, a tuk-tuk was already waiting for me. Bht100 and 15 minutes later, i arrived in Poipet, the border town between Thailand and Cambodia. Everyone, including the Thais were led to the visa control except for me who was the only Singaporean and the only one with no need of a visa. Thank god my government did something great. Not only i dont need a visa, i was given 30 days permit as oppose to the Thais who need a visa and only a 15 day stay. It took me 30 minutes to clear immigration and customs. Something so bizarre about this whole she-bang.

First of all, the Customs and Immigration point looked more like a busy weekend market, the clearance pathway reminded me of a run down temporary container with officers on both in and outside the checkpoint to check on your passports and the most weirdest of all, there is this huge hotel Tropicana and a massive Casino in BETWEEN the country's check point!!! What the hell??!! And NONE of the officers bothered to even peek at any bags!! Damn, shouldn't have left my stash...LOL!!!
Then a bunch of us was asked to wait for a shuttle bus that would take the whole lot to a transport terminal where we could book transport to our destinations. 10 minutes later, the bus came, a really friendly cambodian helper helped us to load our bags and the hot and dusty bus took us 30 minutes to the station.

1400 hrs - When we arrived, to the shock of some of us, the officer in charge said that there were only transport to Siem Reap, the rest had to turn back to Poipet and get transport there! GULLY, were some of us going to SR lucky!! A couple from South Africa called on me and another girl from England to share a taxi which would take us comfortably and in style, 150 km or 2 hrs into the city of Siem Reap. USD10 each and we arrived in Siem Reap 2 hours later.

1600 hrs - PHEW!!! Finally!! The taxi dropped the couple first then me at Im Malis. I could not be more happier. Then when i checked in, MY GOD, i didnt look at the voucher. The check in date was TOMORROW!!! But the nicest receptionist said, "no problem sir.". And next, i found myself lying down in my bed.

1719 hrs - Had my shower, ate my chips and now signing off to rest a bit and off to the old market later. I need my fried chilli fish!!!

1929 hrs - Back in my hotel room. The hunt for my fried fish was not successful. Instead i settled for a 2-piece sweet and sour fillet of mackerel. Not even close to what i was looking for. But what was successful was the purchase of a new sim card. At least i am happy that communication is up and running again.

Not surprised that i am absolutely knackered. Gonna clean up and hit the sack. Nanite people, i am sooooo happy to be back in Siem Reap. It all brings back memories when i was here with my Wizard and my 2 disciples.. Love it love it love it....muacks!!!

Day NINE
Date - Monday, 9 April 2012
0824 hrs

At 3.00am this morning, i was awaken by a tremor! I rolled over to see who was trying to open my door. And as the door was pushed open, i saw a silhoutte of what seemed to be like a 500-pound man. I rolled over thinking, oh well, it must be my new roommate. 5 minutes later, the tremors turned into earthquakes as Mr Snuffles snored away shaking the room everytime he did it. So there goes my sleepless night. I waited till first light, got up, showered, changed and went downstairs to chillout at breakfast table. And here i am, with my chicken porridge, running away from my roommate and wont come back till later. Haha... I am over reacting, i know and he could be the nicest guy. But for now, i am not staying in a room with Mr Snuffles, though i love Mr Snuffleupagas of sesame street. Kind and soft spoken however big and hairy.

Right, after watching The Queen and see how heartless the British monarchy is to its People's Princess, i am determine to search for a heartful Queen Sirikit, on foot. I thought if one is to find a country's love for her queen, it has to be in the countryside but being in bangkok, i had to mke do with the suburbs. So there i went, of on foot to the backstreets first. I set off on foot and to the alleys, then what i thought looked like a clean turn to the alleyway, turned out to be a street that in a remote sense looked like Chelsea, London and where it ended, my God, at The Shangri-La Hotel!! What a paradox! I kept on walking and stumble upon Bangrak Market where tons of. Nonsense were selling like in Patpong and Chatuchak but at an even lower price! Clearly it caters for the locals.

I finally arrived at Sathorn Pier where i decided to take a boat to the other side of the river, bangkok's flip side. I was dropped at a park where gymnast filled the place and everybody was seemed keen to pump up a muscle. I kept walking and a tuk-tuk was smiling at me, it work, i hopped on and asked him to just go. After about 10 minutes, i saw what become become the aight of the day, Wat Arun. Majestically stood right before me. I had to ask the tuk-tuk to stop. No matter where you turn at this temple, its pagoda would be staring at you and captivating your heart and you would not want to miss capturing it on camera. Equipped with just my iPad2 and a stunning light, i ended up taking 45 photos of it in a span of 30 minutes. Wat Arun may not stand grand compared to Angkor Wat but its intricacy in its murals, carvings are as delicate and incredibly beautiful as any temples i have ever seen. They left me breathless but i just had to go as it was getting dark and i was not sure of the walk back.

Leaving Wat Arun, i took a turn to what later became an interesting wrong turn. I found myself following the light as i shone stunningly at everything it touches. Walls, trees, pathways, shops, people, monks, all turned out like a picture perfect painting. As i walked further into my seemingly wrong way, i stumble upon this art studio coffee shop. Its a rustic cafe designed to look like a run down edgy art studio. It was the coolest thing. I will definitely come back to it as i was pretty stricken with panic not knowing where i was but i got what i wanted. The smiles of every single person i saw, proclaiming what my initial intention was, finding love of the queen's people. A huge photo of Queen Sirikit hangs endearingly over every bridge in this side of the city.

After an hour of walking, passing by The Royal Thai Naval post, i quit. Flagged down a taxi and head straight to Hualamphong to restart my walk. Got there, took the MRT to Silom and walked back home from there. In the end, i stopped by Jameson Pub, had a burger and a beer and now back at the hostel.

Oh what a day!! Gosh, i dont remember walking this far and this long. Nonetheless, at the end of the day, i am happy. Happy to know that people still love a monarchy's rule. Especially one that stands deep in the heart of its nation. What a monarch shows in this country is simply one thing, compassion... I love it. Nanite people, early tran leaves for Aranthyaprathet bund for Siem Reap! Can't wait!!

The Journey Begins

Day EIGHT
Date - Sunday, 8 April 2012
0815 hrs

Good Morning WORLD! I had the best sleep since i got sick 10 days ago. Ok, the yoga yesterday did 2 things. It made my body sore like in the old days but it also kicked the virus in the butt once and for all. Nonetheless, in both ways, it made me feel sooooooo good. So today, i am gonna skip yoga class and head for Chatuchak Market after breakfast. What say you??

So i lasted only an hour in Chatuchak market. That was already inclusive of the 20 minutes i spent having ice cappuccino at this cool cafe where the deejay spinned chillout music. A perfect hangout after a hard night, not that i had one... He played songs from cafe del mar and made me feel like i was in potato head in Bali. The market proved to be too much for me. The day was bright and throngs of people started to pour in. I was very disciplined to stick to my decision of buying only 2 things, a coffee painting and a swiss army knife. Got the 2 and scrammed out of there! Got to the market at 10.00 hrs and by 11.30am, i was back in my room and guess what? A new roomate yet again.

I rented Star Trek and watched it in the TV room while waitng for my room to be cleaned. Beamed me up Scotty!! After the show, went back to my room and what dya know? The cleaning lady decided to give my room a miss! Of course i complained... Ah well, might as well have a nap. 2 hrs i was gone. Woke up, strolled down to Siam Paragon and catch A Cold Light Of Day. My god, Bruce Willis looked damn good at his age. I hope i grow old as gracefully as him. After the movie, i thought of going for a massage but got rained out instead.. And it didnt stop! Geez... You know, when bangkok gets wet, it floods!! After an hour, i made a run for it. Got to the hostel as wet as hell but happy. Had my dinner and now gonna go check out who my new roomate is and hit the sack.

You know like i said earlier, there is something about the Thai people and their king. When i was standing up in the cinema upon the start of the national anthem, i felt so moved, it nearly brought me tears... Its so touching lah the song. And among all the crowd i was in tday, have you ever been in a crowd and yet feel lonely? Its not great... But there it is, loneliness creeps in when is least expected... So run.

Good nite people. The lesson i learn today is that loneliness is a choice. You can run and find yr comfort from it. People, places, anything... Even to be alone cos being alone can sometimes allow you to escape from being lonely...

Day SEVEN
Date - Saturday, 7 April 2012
1300 hrs

HELLO WORLD!! Have you heard? AZMI IS BACK!! Woke up this morning with high spirits and such enthusiasm of having a yoga practice at yoga elements and Mark was such a fabulous ashtanga yoga teacher and it being an ashtanga class, i was in my element. Everyone in that Flow class was super and it WAS a strong class. Despite my being sick, Mark said i had a beautiful class. I heard my pants just crack! LOL!! Ok i shall skip the part where i accidentally stored my things in the female locker room and go straight to the part where the practice brought me bck to mysore where after the class everyone got out and had young coconut drink by the roadside. It was yummy!

Now i am back at the hostel and having my Tom Yum Kai, which would set me up for the day. Gonna go up later, put my clothes in the laundry and have a shower. Rent a video, laze out, have a nap and see whats next....

I have a new roomate to take over the girls that left. An indian boy from mumbai who lives in hong kong named Sahul. When i came in the room, he was already helping himself to my ipad charger. How nice. I left and went for a walk to see if the man with one limb was still there under the bridge but no luck. He was gone. So i walked 30 minutes all the way to patpong. I found myself shying away from all these bars where 20 years ago, i would be rushing towards them! I ended up at HappyBar. Just opposite patpong. Had my dinner and a beer and watch life goes by.

A good thing about looking like a thai is that you dont get hassled by peddlars and you are treated equally and you get to sit down by the streets and be left alone, with a peace of mind... After dinner, i decided to brave up and walk through the red light alley and see the action, pretending like a thai. I skipped the boys town cos this is the part where you dont want to look like a thai cos first, the thai working boys think you are a competition and the foreigners think you are available. But then again, who are you kidding, that was 20 years ago, when i was still young, pretty, slim and naive.... Er no, still i will skip it.

Walking thru the red light was interesting. The foreigners were hassled like hell while NO ONE approached me. Scores of girls were lined up or seated outside their bars like a lined up leather goods at next door patpong. I must tell you that these girls are really pretty and if i actually LIKE girls, this is such a horribly tempting meat market.

So i hurriedly went for the train passing by lots of bars where i saw a few comrades from singaporebut decided to give it a miss cos i know where that would take me if i said hello. No no, not going to party, gonna go to hostel and go to bed. Hehe.. So here i am, 2140 hrs, back at my hostel and getting ready for bed...

Bright lights big city. A city of temptation and full of possibilities. And yes, you will be surprised by wonders at corners of the city if you could manage to fork out the little courage to just take a stroll..

Day SIX
Date - Friday, 6 April 2012
0840 hrs

The night was spent tossing and turning cos of the rising fever. Dunno why but i started to burn up again this morning. After a few hrs, it went down. Maybe all is going off of my body. Now, after breakfast and my meds, i felt much better and the weather is kewlth , so i thought i make my way down to the river and take a boat to the royal palace. Happy Full Moon people!

The trip to the Grand Palace was a very very nice one. Paid for a day pass. But actually i only wanted to see the Grand Palace. The cloudy weather helped in keeping the temperature down and itwas windy, so itwas really nice. There were a million people at the palace, most of them from china. I dunno why, maybe its just me but people from this region have this stench that is so impossible to ignore. Hmm.. Maybe its just me. So i had to leave thepalace after jst 15 minutes. Had a walk around the vicinity of the palace and head up to the maharaj pier, where the boat took me back to the start, sathorn. I gave away my day pass to a couple, might as well since i am not gonna use it anymore.

I have been rather generous lately. Well, i have been emptying my pocket of coins to beggars thinking what the heck, a good deed is a good deed no matter how small it is. Ok me back at the hostel. Its 11.00hrs, having lunch and gonna go for my nap after this. Oh yeah, my meds first...

Woke up at 12.30 hrs. Oh darn, the cleaning lady is gonna come. Better get up. Got down, rented a dvd titled Limitless and snuggled like a potato couch in the TV room upstairs while waiting for my room to be cleaned, well more like just tidied up. The movie was such a trip up man! Geez, i felt high like i had just taken the same pill whatever Bradley Cooper took in that movie! Whoa, i better go check on my room. But you know what? I suddenly felt a whiff of good health! So i packed my bag and set out to find Yoga Elements. Finally found it but reception said today is a holiday so they only had classes till 3pm. Damn! So i booked for a class tomorrow morning at 10.00 hrs. And also on sunday. So here i am again with nothing to do. What to do, what to do? No price for guessing, i went for the movies. But ive watched every english movie that was showing so i went for Wrath of The Titans again. This time i had to pay double! Was it the holiday? No, i later found out i had just booked myself a ticket at the Royal Cinema Hall! WOW... and it was kewl, as usual, everybody stood up for the National Anthem, but it was a good sign that the movie is going to start next.

There is something endearing about the Thais and their King and it shows in the way respect was given towards the National Anthem, how touching the song was and how moving the video of it showing the kind hearted king Bumibhol regards and treats his kingdom with compassion. I felt kind of moved with all of this. I decided that Thais are the loveliest people and Arabs are the opposite ones. Thats to compare the 2 lah....

Alright everyone, i have arrived at the hostel. Its 2040 hrs and i am signing this off in 5 minutes. Really looking forward for my long awaited yoga practice tomorrow morning. Hope you are not missing your practice ok? Nanite... Muacks. Now where are my meds??

Day FIVE
Date - Thursday, 5 April 2012
0935 hrs

I woke up not knowing what day it was. After shower, i went down for breakfast of muffins and cappuccino and waited for my wizards signal to wire money via western union so that i can pay to the hospital and not get into trouble with the law. Otherwise its like claire danes in a bkk prison huh? Ok ok. Got the money, now on my way to the posh hospital. Wish me luck!!

Right, time is 1430hrs. Just got back from hospital. Not much ado there. Paid BHT5196 and scrammed from there. Took the train, which so far has been pleasant. People actually queue! Malaysia should learn lots from this city lone. Anyway, i gotta get my lunch, then to the hostel, take my meds and crash. Too hot to do anything. Wake up after my nap, gonna see the royal palace. Muacks...

Well i took a couple of hours nap, took a shower and plan to head to see the royal palace as tomorrow is full moon and i am sure its going to be packed. Truth be known, the boat ride is closed. So instead of going to the palace, i went to patpong to sink in old times. What to do, what to do? In the end i thought i go for a thai massage to drain this toxins away. I was careful to find a decent one and not one which may end end in a massage komplit! Across of the meridien hotel was where i went. My therapist seemed like a lilttle girl, lest that i know, she had powerful hands! Overall the massage was really good and the place was very professional. So i was happy. Then walked to tawana ramada, the hotel where i used to stay as a crew, to have my favorite pad thai in thailand! A beer to end the night and a walk thru patpong just to reminisce the old days. Wow i thot, 15 years, nothings change in patpong.
Now i am back at the hostel, gonna have my usual melon shake before bed... Nanite peeps..

PS, i am feeling much much better...

Day FOUR
Date - Wednesday, 4 April 2012
Time - 0935 hrs

Woke up with a bad diarrhea, fever, flu. This time i had blood in the flu discharge. My wizard called and with a stern voice, "Go to the doctor sayang, promise me!!". And so i did, its like he took a wand at me and said "Expecto Petronum!". And i amazingly got up and somehow found the strength to drag myself to the hospital.
The Bumrungrad International looked like The Conrad International. No less. I thought this is goingto cost me a bomb but a wizardress said it was ok. So, i registered, saw the doctor, diagnosed as having sinusitis, went to the cashier and WHAT??? USD300!!! I took my bag and fled the scene. I was so shock i walked 1 mile to the train station, went to siam paragon and watched Hunger Games!!! Then spoke to my wizard who wanted to set me up with gm of siam hotel, jason to stay with him. I said, my problem is not the hotel stay, it was the lack of money to pay for my meds lah. So i went back to the hostel, slept and not be bothered abt it....

Day THREE
Date - Tuesday, 3 April 2012

Was late in getting the train ticket, so only left the upper berth. Heard it was small, but i was sick and i only wanted to sleep. When the train finally arrived, i got on and met a man from ipoh who was going to meet his wife in chiang mai. I didnt buy any food on board, thinking there was going to be a canteen. Anyway no luck and the man from ipoh gave me one of his large bottles of water. Then we arrive at immigration. Just passport checks, no bag checks at all!! Weird. Anyway, bought food from the customs canteen, ate my medicine and fell asleep. 10 hours. Food were sold at each stop by vendors who came on board but i could buy them cos i didnt have any small change. My fever rising, flu getting worse, stomach growling. So hungry... The man from ipoh gave me his bread. Thank god...

22 hours later, train arrived at Hua Lamphong station. By this time, cold sweat broke out, i had to drag myself out of the train, my knees were shaking, my vision blurred. I was wondering if i could make it thru. I saw Black Canyon coffee.. Must sit down. Must eat something. After purchasing a local sim card, i sat down and rest at the coffee shop and plan.
Took a train to silom and a nice lady samaritan literally took me by the hand and put me in the right train to surasak station where my hostel is. She was an angel, i thought. She did looked like Kuan-yin.

Arrived at the hostel, my speech was already slurred, i couldnt see properly. My shoulders were hurt by my heavy backpack. The reception put me in the women's dorm where my roomates were 2 girls from chiang mai. They gave me some water. I took my meds, took a shower and slept till night time... Woke up, took my dinner and spoke to my wizard who asked me to see a doctor. I took my meds, and slept again. 10 hours...

Day TWO
Date - Monday, 2 April 2012
Time - 1030 hrs

I still cant get over the fact of how nice this hotel is! Nice shower, breakfast, beds, clean.. And get this, iPads provided for use at the chillout area! You MUST stay at this hotel - Ryokan@Muntri Street. Its walking distance to the main drag in Jalan Penang. I walked to 1 Avenue, which was suppose to be a main attraction Mall but yeah, whatever. So i went to Prangin Mall to catch Wrath of The Titans, which i thought was very good lah..

Ok its almost 11am. I think i have to set out soon to the ferry terminal and head to KTM for my tickets to bangkok later. Now this is gonna be rougher. But wish me luck guys! I'm gonna need lots!

PS: Missing my Eva.......

A

Day ONE
Date - 1 April 2012
Time - 0613hrs

I have been up watching Eva sleep so soundly next to me the whole night. Don't know why, despite a long and tedious day, I still couldn't sleep. Nonetheless, glad that I could at least made Eva feel cumfy. God I am gonna miss her. Its one of the hardest thing as this is going to be the longest I am going to leave her, ever.
Even with my playing games on my iPad didn't help with my trying to get a good night sleep, just too anxious of the whole journey. I ran through my itinerary about 3-4 times to make sure timings were read right and dates were confirmed correct as well.
Surya is coming to pick me up at 7.30am. That would give me about an hour to get ready. Well folks, this is it, gonna get things rolling!! Wish me luck!! LOVE YOU EVA!!! Ciao!!!
